Play-Reading Marathon 2023: Anatomy of a Suicide

A Cantonese play-reading of Alice Birch’s poignant exploration of the intergenerational impact of mental illness on a family of women. The play intricately weaves together the lives of three generations: Carol, Anna, and Bonnie. Carol struggles with deep-seated depression that influences her daughter Anna, who grapples with her own mental health issues and substance abuse as a result. Bonnie, the youngest, witnesses the effects of these struggles on her family and fights to break free from the cycle of despair. Birch's narrative structure skillfully overlaps the women’s stories, highlighting the enduring and often invisible threads that connect the pain and resilience across generations.
