"Flowing Warblers" revolves around stories of diaspora across Hong Kong, London, Berlin, Girona, and the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Five intersecting narratives weave together seemingly divergent yet interconnected choices of leaving and staying, guiding the audience between memory and aspiration, gazing at the stars above and the world below.
Synposis
In a London park, childhood friends from high school arrange to meet, leaving behind an unfinished farewell and a pair of rackets on the grass before parting ways. A wife and husband agree to separately immigrate to the UK and Spain, hoping to reunite after three years, but the wife struggles with depression, pondering the meaning of a shared destiny under a ginkgo tree, ultimately resolving to break free from their planned migration and bravely face the future.
A mother who journeyed far to care for her daughter-in-law resolutely leaves behind her own husband and pride in Hong Kong to live in London. Unable to speak English, she can only rebuild her tentative life along a single subway line. A scientist trapped in a small Spanish town wavers between professional choices and family happiness; as his research contract nears its end, the inviting warmth of the southern European sun beckons, ultimately unleashing his pent-up inner turmoil beyond control.
A writer self-exiles to the edge of the world in Ireland to focus on writing, but the 5,000 books on local studies he needs are delayed in transit. His wife, who has dementia, yearns for her son and transforms her letters home into earthen shrines. A dreaming young girl possesses the extraordinary ability to foresee upcoming people and events. However, upon arriving in the liberated realm of Berlin, she grows anxious and afraid to stride forward.
A transgender eagerly exchanges identities with others, vowing to become a mascot leaping from one point to another, demonstrating the concept of fluid identity to the world. A daughter who left and then returned strives to rebuild her home in the New Territories, making new friends and examining the changing reality while questioning whether the simple joys of living are possible in this city.
Leaving and staying, dispersal and return – the travellers in these stories are strangers to one another, yet they are subtly connected beneath the profound starlight.
