hongkongshima

"I" am confined to an isolation ward in Hong Kong. There are no "what ifs" here, only the stark reality unfolding before me. Striving for inner peace, I cling to fragments of memory, piecing together and imagining a hypothetical homeland – a place I can only visit with my eyes closed.

"He" is a Hongkonger who has sought refuge in Japan. In perpetual motion, he calls himself a Guide, offering virtual tours of Japan through his phone, a journey for the eyes. He yearns for a homeland yet to be born, a place he can neither reach nor escape.

Connected through a screen, we embark on a quest to find Hongkongshima.

Written by Wu King-yeung, resident playwright of On & On, “hongkongshima” is set in a fictional time and space where Hong Kong is ravaged by a "pandemic" that causes memory loss in its victims, "I" and "Heart" find themselves stranded in an isolation ward. They reach out to the Guide, who offers a surrogate travel service through live streaming. Together, they traverse the dreamscapes and realities of Japan and Hong Kong, searching for a place of solace for both body and soul.
