Play-Reading Marathon 2020: Calderón
A Cantonese play-reading of the legendary film director, poet, and Marxist, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s only theatrical work published during his lifetime.
The script features the protagonist whose soul inhabits families of three different social classes in Spain during the military dictatorship period from 1967 to 1968. Her experiences, blurring the lines between reality and dreams, touch upon the historical events of the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the student movements of 1968, reflecting the ideological conflicts of the time. Despite Pasolini's pessimistic view of the era and the overwhelming power of the ruling systems, he remained committed to resistance in his own unique way.
