Masterclass on Contemporary Theatre: Contemporary French Theatre in the 21th century by Yang Li Li

In the 1990s, a transformative wave of French theatre directors emerged, diverging significantly from previous styles by embracing non-literal interpretations and exploratory, vibrant approaches to performance. These directors aimed to transcend traditional theatrical boundaries using diverse methods such as cross-disciplinary collaboration, multimedia, stylised presentations, and a focus on physical acting, which injected robust energy into their productions.

The masterclass explores this era with the emergence of new generation directors in Europe, featuring video excerpts to analyse their aesthetics, discusses modern adaptations of Molière’s "The Miser," and concludes with an examination of Bernard-Marie Koltès' works' new interpretations from France to the Chinese-speaking world, enriching attendees' understanding of contemporary French theatre.
