Book of Lost Words

Navigated by the lost voice, Exploring the Spirits of the Old City

It all started with five undeliverable final letters from sixty years ago. A girl opens the final letter left by her never-met grandfather before his execution. As more letters from the deceased are uncovered, those lives that couldn't say goodbye form a collective portrait, their final words never forgotten even after more than half a century.

"Book of Lost Words" is a collaboration between Snow Huang (Taiwan) and Wong Hin-yan (Hong Kong), drawing on real events and using Taiwanese historical archives as textual materials. Several Hong Kong actors perform in Cantonese the letters and poems left by the deceased, using voice and landscape as mediums to summon the memories of the departed. In the timeless Tokwawan, navigating between the hustle and bustle and the quiet of the city, the participants traverse real landscapes, listening quietly to the final letters that have crossed oceans.
