Masterclass & Showcase: Centre for Theater Practices Gardzienice

The Centre for Theatre Practices Gardzienice, founded in 1977 by Wlodzimierz Staniewski after his collaboration with Jerzy Grotowski in the early 70s, is one of the oldest and most prestigious experimental theatre companies today. Located in a small village in eastern Poland, Gardzienice has been renowned for its meticulous analysis and application of folk and ancient musical traditions, powerful physical and vocal techniques, commitment to creating theatre in natural environments, and the development of “mutuality” and “musicality” in performance training.

Led by Staniewski and his team members, this masterclass delves into a variety of performance training focused on the body and voice derived from Grotowski's Poor Theatre. It guides participants through ancient Greek songs, vocal techniques, religious imagery, rhythms, postures, texts, and partner exercises to explore and transform the “musicality” within their bodies for character interpretation, shaping, and portrayal, enhancing the actor's ability to convert songs or texts into diverse physical movements and vocal expressions, thus allowing performances to resonate with the audience like music, with melody and rhythm.
